Yes, all the fashion magazines, the knitting and the crochet magazines, and the TV/internet style shows  are showing big, Big, BIGGER knits! And they’re so gorgeous, and they’re fast to knit, but… but…. but….

“Super-bulky knits look great on a 5′ 10″, 90 lb model, but not me! They’re so pricey with so little yardage! And they’re so heavy–who could wear all that?! Even if you’re skinny, it weighs a ton!”

The answer is Yes, you can wear these yarns, if you choose wisely.   Here are some tips:

  • Accessories–scarves, hats, muffs–give the fashion look without being overwhelming
  • Look at the cost of the garment, not the price of the skein.  Most of these yarns are cost-effective.
  • Remember to keep the fabric and the fit loose–unless it’s an outerwear coat or jacket, these yarns shouldn’t be firmly knit.  They also not meant to be knit into sweaters that are close-fitting; instead choose patterns for layering garments.
  • Natural fibers are heavier than synthetics.  In these super big yarns, a synthetic portion or blend is a big plus in keeping them light enough to wear.
  • “Cable knit” yarns, where the strand is really a knitted tube, are much lighter to wear, and warm too.

One of our favorite designers, Beth has successfully launched her maiden voyage into DVD production with Knitting Ganseys with Beth Brown-Reinsel. The DVD will take you through the history, techniques and process of designing and knitting one of these wonderful sweaters.  Beth is a calm and patient teacher, and this DVD is based on one of her most popular classes.

Professionally filmed and produced, this DVD is jam-packed with information, yet it is Knitting Ganseys DVDso smoothly presented that it is easy to absorb and remember.  For example, Beth’s discussion and demonstrated explanation of the differences between worsted and woolen yarns is one of the best I’ve ever seen.  Many knitters have no appreciation or understanding of this issue, yet Beth succinctly explains the concept in context, so you’ll also understand why this is important to your yarn selection, and how it affects your finished product.

Another great feature is that the segments are categorized in several different ways, so you can easily watch them the way that is best for you.  Broad overview?  Focused topic?  Step-by-step version?  Watch the whole thing like a novel or skip around like a dictionary, whatever suits your needs.

There is a knit-along miniature gansey you can do, as well as a previously unpublished design.  There are all sorts of useful files that you can print out, as well as the technique sections where Beth demonstrates the technique from beginning to end, in slow motion if you want that.

All in all, you’ll come away with an appreciation for Ganseys, a better understanding of knitting overall, and a great big dose of enthusiasm for your next project.

Congratulations, Beth!

This isn’t the usual time of year for new yarn introductions, but this is a pretty special yarn.  We are thrilled to be able to offer Supreme Possum Merino yarn to the US market.

Supreme Possum Merino

Supreme Possum Merino

There have been possum yarns on and off over the years, but this is a blend that is new, and simply sumptuous.  We were able to get a reasonable supply to take with us to Stitches East, and it was very well received there.

Right now we have the fingering/sport weight in stock, in seven colors.  The description of the weight is tricky, since the possum fur is so light that the yardage is very generous.  The 50 g ball has about 234 yards.  A better description is that it’s 13 wraps per inch (wpi).  The interesting thing about this yarn is that it knits to such a wide variety of gauges, all while looking great.  This yarn would make cozy socks on size 2-3 needles.  The New Zealanders recommend using a size 3 needle for sweater fabric, but when I swatched it I really preferred a size 4 needle, and a size 5 wasn’t out of the question either.  I would certainly consider it for a heavily textured pattern.

The colors are somewhat limited by the possum fur, as it cannot be bleached.  The dye penetrates the wool, possum and silk differently, resulting in heathery hues with depth and interest.  Right now there are seven colors:  Black (not shown below), Denim Blue, Rose Pink, Navy, Mossy Green, Natural and Deep Red.

We’ve sent samples to Knitty for their roundtable knit evaluation–I’ll let you know what we hear back.   This yarn would make a great last minute hat gift, and just one skein will do it.
