So much incredible fashion! Lopi (Part 1)

So much incredible fashion! Lopi (Part 1)

Tonight, I’m exhausted. I’ve spent the last three days getting pictures ready for the new Lopi and new Lang books.

Both Istex and Lang manage to cause us internet shops just a ton of trouble in getting the pictures of the designs in the new books (Laurel! stop complaining!)

There are 2 new Lopi books, #29 & #30, plus four others that, while older, we haven’t had since we sold out of the Canadian stock over 4 years ago. They are all wonderful, and the new ones are just killer. They make you want to pick up and knit some Lopi.

Lopi #30 Cover       At the moment I am myself knitting a Christmas present for a family member from regular Lopi.  I can’t tell you what it is exactly because it would give away the surprise if that person reads the blog.

But I am simply loving knitting it–it is so satisfying! The knitting moves right along, and there’s nothing easier than Lopi for two-handed fair isle.  The resulting beautifully patterned yoke is so attractive for such little effort.

Now I know some people are turned off by the feel (the hand) of this yarn.  No, it’s not merino, baby alpaca, or supersoft synthetic.  But it isn’t meant to be worn next to the skin.  It’s for outerwear. And it has many advantages over softer yarns for this use.   Plus, it does become softer with washing.

It doesn’t bother me to knit it right from the ball.  If you have a contact sensitivity to harsher feeling yarns, then I suggest skeining the Lopi from the ball (Bulky Lopi already comes in skeins), tie it in several places, then soak in a cold water bath with a good dollop of  leave-in hair conditioner for an hour or so.  Drain, roll in towels, and hang to dry, then knit.  This will reduce the harsh feel a lot.

The other big announcement is there is a new Lopi coming — Fingering/Lace weight Lopi, called “Einband”

It is beautiful, we saw it at TNNA.  There is also a dedicated book for this yarn that is coming too.  Because of the very light weight and the spin, it becomes very soft after washing, and will definitely be a winner.  Here’s a sneak peek of one of the patterns:

This was harder than I ever imagined… the move, that is

This was harder than I ever imagined… the move, that is

We have had so many problems with this move, very disappointing.  There were personal things lost, but also boxes of Handknitting.com items.

The movers lost a box with all the Stitch Diva patterns & books in it–those of you who have pending orders already know about this.  Right now I can’t link the website page, but if you haven’t seen these designs you are missing a lot.  If you usually knit, these patterns will make you want to learn crochet, and also the reverse–if you crochet you will want to learn to knit.  And everyone will want to try hairpin lace and Tunisian too!!

Out of frustration, I ended up calling Jennifer Hansen (the Stitch Diva) and just ordering some of everything she has currently available, so I suspect we will have some new Stitch Diva designs that we haven’t carried before.

Not such a bad thing after all, considering.

Day 6: Rapid City to Buffalo WY

Day 6: Rapid City to Buffalo WY

A short sight-seeing excursion to Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills yielded this wonderful little-seen profile of GW:

Geo Washington
Profile view of Washington at Mt. Rushmore

A great view from the north-west side of the monument, outside the formal viewing area.  In this view you cannot see the lapels of Washington’s coat, like you can in a full front view.

And yes, the color is accurate.  The sky really is that blue.

Moving on, we took the route north through Deadwood, where Wild Bill Hickok was shot at the poker tables.  (Aces & 8’s, you know).  It’s a charming town jam-packed with historical significance.   It’s gotten a lot more lively in recent years with legalized gaming tables.  I’m not much of a gambler myself so I cannot describe the extent of those activities, but I certainly appreciate the increased numbers of restaurants, museums, historical activities, shops and other entertainments that are now available.

The remainder of the trip is through the Black Hills National Forest.  The most similar landscape I can think of is the Sierras around Tahoe.  The altitude isn’t as high, but the Ponderosa Pine forest goes right down to the lakeshores, and the water is bluer than blue.

We finally got to Buffalo in mid-afternoon, and of course we went straight to see Val and Karen at Mountain Meadow Wool!  They have a ton of new products, and I’ll have to write about those separately, because I’m way too tired.

Tomorrow is the last leg– On to Jackson!

Day 5: Sioux Falls to Rapid City

Day 5: Sioux Falls to Rapid City

Still hot but a one-of-a-kind visual treat driving through Badlands National Park.  This is one of the least visited national parks, but it is incredibly beautiful in an otherworldly kind of way.

This wasn’t my first visit here; I had been here when our children were 7 & 10, and we stayed a couple of days exploring.  The amazing part of the Badlands NP is that the scenery changes constantly throughout the day.  Early morning is a different color from midday, and late afternoon, and sunset & twilight are different still.  I highly recommend a visit.

Days 2 & 3 — Cleveland to Ludington, and on to Wisconsin

Days 2 & 3 — Cleveland to Ludington, and on to Wisconsin

WHERE???

Ludington, MI is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, and home of the SS Badger Car Ferry that traverses the Lake to Manitowoc WI.  We thought this might be a nice little relaxing respite from all the driving.  And it was–it was delightful, although quite windy.  But that didn’t stop 2 knitters I saw on the bow area of the top deck from stitching away!  One was working on EZ’s Baby Surprise Jacket, and the other was half way through a Transverse Jacket, knit from side to side.

Anyway, here’s some of the scenery from the cruise …

View from the deck…

GGGGGG!!!!!!!!

Seriously, there were wonderful views of the shore during departure & arrival, and a sailing regatta with race, that we got to watch.  The vibrant colors of the sails against the misty surface were truly enervating and delightful.

Next, day 4

Day 4: Hot as Hades!

Day 4: Hot as Hades!

OH —  MY — GOODNESS!  The Midwest is caught under a dome of sweltering, oppressive heat.  It must be record-setting.

We left early this morning, and stopped early too.  We’re now in Sioux Falls, SD, it’s 102 with high humidity so the heat index is 115-120, and it’s 5 pm.  Arrrgggghhhhhhh.  We’re hoping it will be easier as the weather moves eastward and we continue to move west.

Whew.

On the Road, and more

On the Road, and more

Yes we finally got completely packed up, moved out and on the road!  Packing & loading day (Thursday) was a real trial, with all the people everywhere, constant questions, and complete confusion!

Fortunately we had all the yarn in the warehouse ready to go, so that part was pretty smooth, but still it filled up more of the truck than the movers had expected, so there was some last minute reorganization.  By the time the last truck left the house at 7:30 pm, I was thoroughly frazzled and both of us were exhausted.   Poor Sadie, she was beside herself with all the people and activity all over her house.  But she survived.

Day 1:  A big let-down — anti-climax I should say.  Pack up the cars, sweep out the house, all those stupid last-minute things that take forever!  Finally on the road at noon, we headed for Cleveland.  The highlight of the trip so far — seeing our friends of many years, Bernie and Maurice for dinner.  Sitting at their picnic table having dinner, it finally began to feel as if it all was really happening right now!

Next entry…. Day 2!
